  • Personal information:

Content about Betty and James is fairly sparse - James was born in Rochdale, Lancashire, England (about 10 miles N-NE of Manchester), and was a cotton mill owner. Strikes, resulting from introducing machinery to the mill, ended up putting him out of business.
Betty and James were married in Rochdale.
James eventually emigrated to Racine (date as yet unknown)
In the 1841 Pigot's Directory of Lancashire, In the listings for Rochdale, A James Gorton is listed as a shopkeeper, Oldham New Road. Unknown if this is the same James Gorton.
According to a handwritten note by Dorothy Lains Gorton, Betty "came of celebrated family - direct descendant of Wm The Conquerer". [Ed: This seems unlikely] Independent research by another family member (Fran Buffham) shows that James was married to "Bella McAllister", presumably Isabella McAllister - this author has uncovered a couple of references to James being married to Isabella. Bella: b 1 Aug, 1810 Manchester, England, d 28 Feb, 1890, Racine, WI
